Sales and Use Tax Election
Currently, there are three major issues facing the District which require additional funding:
By levying a Sales and Use Tax, OCESD 1 would be shifting a portion of the funding for emergency services from the property owners to anyone buying taxable goods and services in the District. Thus, the Board of Commissioner has chosen to seek additional funding through Sales and Use Tax while it is available to the District.
The Board of Commissioners (“the Board”) of Orange County Emergency Services District No. 1 (“OCESD 1” or “the District”) has called for a sales and use tax proposition to be on the election ballot for Saturday, May 4, 2024.
If approved by voters, this proposition would authorize up to one and a half percent (1.5%) to be captured by the District in all areas not yet at the state maximum of 8.25%. The funds will be used to address the growing needs of the residents within the District.
No. This is a sales and use tax, which will be applied to all taxable goods and services purchased within the District boundaries. This would apply to local residents and anyone traveling through the District who purchases taxable goods or services.
No. The state maximum on all taxable purchases is 8.25%. This will capture the 1.5% (one and a half pennies on every dollar) in those places within the District boundaries not already collecting 8.25% on taxable purchases.
The three overarching goals in the long range plan are:
The May 4, 2024 ballot language will read as follows:
The adoption of a local sales and use tax in Orange County Emergency Services District No.1 at a rate not to exceed the state maximum of one and a half (1.5%) percent in any location in the District.
AOCESD 1 will continue to work to serve the residents within the District boundaries, but its ability to address the issues facing the District and implement the long-term District plan would be limited to current resources.
Early Voting begins April 22nd, 2024, and Election Day is May 4, 2024. For more information on voting including registering to vote, go to: https://www.co.orange.tx.us/departments/ElectionsAdministration
